Tablets as Laptop Replacement?

I’ve been looking for a replacement for my big, old, portly laptop that recently went tits up on me. I’ve also been eyeballing the kindles. I would definitely like one of those for reading and of course for proofreading/making sure my book looks good when it’s released.

When I bought the laptop, I spent serious money on it because I intended it to be a portable gaming laptop. I’m in a completely different financial situation now. Certainly not able to spend lots of cash on a computer I only use when I’m not home. At this point my main wants are cheap, light (the old girl is like carrying a small child on my shoulder) and a screen that I don’t have to squint to see. The little netbooks are cute, but my older eyes find them torturous.

This morning I am back to thinking about tablets as an option thanks to Chuck Wendig and his iPad for writers post.
I’ve kind of been anti-tablet because of the Microsoft Courier heartbreak I suffered when the evil empire announced that they weren’t moving forward with it. If you’d like to torture yourself with what might have been, check it out.

As I see it. My tablet options are the iPad, Samsung Galaxy and Dell has a little touchscreen hybrid that I like but is probably out of my price range. I like the Android platform more than Apple. Just because there are more options there. Is there a kindle app for the iPad? Something to look into. Also there is an app (Tapose) hopefully coming for the iPad that makes it function like the Courier might have. If the developer gets full funding for that project, it will definitely sway me!

What are your thoughts on all of the tablet happenings. Do you think it could replace a laptop?

  • I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad last year and I bought hubby an iPad. I did this because, like you, I wanted a laptop for writing and a tablet for…well, everything else.

Now, I wish I’d bought myself an iPad with bluetooth keyboard and mouse and stand because I think that would have been smarter.
